White Lion — A Classic Made for Patina

Among traditional Wenwan walnuts, few varieties are as closely associated with transformation as the White Lion, or Bai Shi Zi (白狮子).

Despite its English name, White Lion does not refer to a white-colored shell. The name belongs to a well-known lineage within the broader Lion Head family and has become one of the most familiar names among Wenwan collectors.

A classic White Lion is often recognized by its broad, rounded body, substantial shoulders, deep natural texture, and characteristic Cross Tip (十字尖) found on many traditional examples.

But what truly makes White Lion special is the way it ages.

With regular handling and proper care, the surface gradually becomes smoother, richer, and more translucent. Its natural color can develop from warm wood tones into deeper reddish and ruby-like shades, creating the evolving patina that makes Wenwan walnuts so rewarding to collect.

Why Collectors Choose White Lion

• Fast Patina Development
White Lion is especially loved by collectors who enjoy seeing visible color and surface changes over time.
• Classic Lion Head Proportions
Broad shoulders, a full body, and balanced geometry give the variety a substantial and satisfying presence in the palm.
• Distinctive Natural Texture
Deep ridges and organic patterns create both visual character and a rich tactile experience.
• Made for Daily Play
Comfortable proportions and pronounced texture make White Lion an excellent choice for regular hand rotation and long-term patina development.
• Every Pair Ages Differently
Density, shell structure, texture, handling habits, and time all influence the final appearance, making each finished pair uniquely personal.

From Walnut to Patina

A new pair is only the beginning.

The real beauty of White Lion appears slowly through handling, brushing, cleaning, and time. The surface softens visually, the valleys deepen in tone, and the shell gradually takes on a polished glow.

This transformation is one of the defining pleasures of Wenwan:
