Sizuolou — A Classic of the Lion Head Family

Sizuolou holds a special place in traditional Wenwan walnut culture.

Originating from the mountainous Pinggu region of Beijing, this classic Lion Head variety became highly regarded for its distinctive proportions, dense shell structure, elegant texture, and satisfying hand feel.

A well-formed Sizuolou combines strength with balance.

Its body is broad and full.

Its profile sits relatively low.

Its edges are thick and substantial.

And its natural ridges flow across the shell with a structured yet organic rhythm.

The result is a walnut that feels both powerful and refined.

What Makes Sizuolou Special?

• Low, Full Profile
Classic examples are known for a broad belly and relatively low overall shape.
• Thick, Substantial Edges
Strong edges give Sizuolou a solid structure and confident silhouette.
• Refined Natural Texture
Deep yet flowing ridges create a balanced pattern without appearing overly aggressive.
• Distinctive Floral Base
One of the most recognizable characteristics of traditional Sizuolou is its tightly structured, flower-like base.
• Dense Shell Structure
Good examples are valued for their solid density and substantial feel in the palm.
• Balanced Hand Feel
Its broad proportions and compact structure make Sizuolou exceptionally comfortable for long-term daily handling.

A Shape Built Around Balance

Sizuolou is not defined by one exaggerated feature.

Its appeal comes from the way everything works together.

The shoulders, belly, edges, tips, base, and texture form a balanced whole. This harmony gives the variety the dignified appearance that has made it a long-standing favorite among experienced Wenwan collectors.

In the hand, its compact profile provides stability while the natural ridges create satisfying tactile feedback during rotation.

It is substantial without feeling awkward.

Detailed without feeling chaotic.

Traditional without becoming ordinary.

Patina Reveals the Structure

As a Sizuolou pair is handled and brushed over time, its structured texture becomes increasingly expressive.

Raised ridges gradually polish.

Deeper valleys retain contrast.

The shell develops warmer tones and increasing translucency.

With continued play, the originally strong structure takes on a softer visual depth while preserving the distinctive architecture of the walnut.

A classic shape becomes more personal with every year in the hand.

A Wenwan Classic for Serious Collectors

Sizuolou has remained desirable because it represents many of the qualities collectors traditionally look for in a Lion Head walnut:

proportion, structure, texture, density, and balance.

Natural variation means that every pair has its own personality. Some examples are especially low and broad, while others display stronger ridges, fuller bellies, or particularly refined bases.

At ZenWalnut, each Sizuolou pair is selected individually for its shell quality, natural structure, proportions, texture, and overall matching.
